(Oct. 20) -- Mob hit man Robert Mormando had two surprises for the Brooklyn, N.Y., judge who sentenced him Monday: first, he renounced the mob and then he announced that he was gay, the New York Daily News reported.
Mormando, 44, was being sentenced for his part in the 2003 shooting of a bagel store owner, who was wounded in his driveway. The hit was ordered by Vincent Gotti, the paper said.
"That's the first time I've heard this in court," Federal Judge Jack Weinstein said of the gangster renouncing the mob.
Mormando, a divorced father of two who became a government informant just after the shooting, has been living in hiding from the Mafia.
"He has been openly gay since he left the mob," his lawyer told the judge.
Mormando faced up to 17 years in prison but was sentenced to time served, even though he hadn't served any prison time, the Daily News said.
