Duke won the ACC tournament Sunday which, if recent history is any guide, will prove to be the highlight of their season. Anonymous donor gives $500,000 at Dickie V Gala
Source: Herald Tribune - Sarasota FL
"We had a genuine miracle last night," Dick Vitale said Saturday, a day after hosting his annual Dickie V Gala to benefit the V Foundation for Cancer Research.
Vitale said that after he gave his speech Friday â he made a passionate plea for support to eradicate cancer â he walked off the stage to find a man waiting for him.
"This guy, young guy, grabs me and he says, 'Hey, I want to make a donation.' I thought he said $5,000, so I say, 'OK, there's donor cards right here on the table.'
"Then the guy says, 'No, I don't think you understand â my child is battling a disease like this â a vicious disease. I want to donate $500,000.' "
Vitale was shocked. His gala traditionally raises more than $1 million each year. Vitale said that his initial estimation for this year's event is "a smashing success, $1.2 to $1.3 million."
Add to that the $500,000 and, as Vitale said, it is a "smashing success"â as much as $1.8 million raised in a single evening for cancer research.
"That will touch your heart," Vitale said.
