DeMar DeRozan, Dunk Contest Throwback

By Bethlehem ShoalsFeb 13th 2010 – 12:43PM

I vowed on Friday to skip the Dunk Contest. By end of that night's broadcast segment, I was having second thoughts. The Dunk-In, so stupid on paper, worked at least on this poor sap. Not necessarily as a preview of competition, but as an introduction to the guy who might well win it all, and with good reason. DeMar...

2010 NBA All-Star Ballot Announced

By Chris TomassonNov 10th 2009 – 5:30PM

I wrote in September that perhaps there would be no worthy center to start for the West in the All-Star Game. But this isn't the way I want to see that solved. Do it on the court, not with the ballot. When the All-Star ballot came out Tuesday, Phoenix power forward Amar'e Stoudemire strangely was listed as a center. Yes,...

Player to Watch: Eric Gordon

By Tom ZillerOct 8th 2009 – 12:00PM

FanHouse previews a player to watch from each NBA team in advance of the 2009-10 season. The 2008 draft class ended up having a collectively surprising rookie season. Four players, by my count, had legitimate claims to the Rookie of the Year award. Derrick Rose, the eventual winner, was a consensus pick, but O.J. Mayo led...

  • 05/25/12 Hornets fans have hope Source: Daily Comet - Thibodaux LA

Looking for some hope Hornets fans?

Just tune into this season's Western Conference finals.

Two of the NBA's smallest market teams, the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder, are playing for the right to go to the NBA finals.

And in my opinion, the winner of this series should be the favorite to win the NBA title.

So why does this matter so much for the Hornets?

San Antonio is the nation's 30th largest market with 2.143 million people and is the seventh-smallest in the NBA in terms of metropolitan population, according to the 2010 U.S. Census.

Oklahoma City is 45th overall with 1.322 million, making it the league's third-smallest media market behind only New Orleans and Memphis.

That means there is hope for small market teams in the NBA.

But I have more good news, the orchestrator of this Thunder team, which is making its second straight Western Conference finals appearance, is the team's general manager Sam Presti, and he is a product of the Spurs organization and is a former protege of current Spurs coach Gregg Popovich.

Do you know who else are products of the Spurs organization?

Hornets senior vice president of basketball operations, general manager Dell Demps and head coach Monty Williams.

Demps played for the Spurs during a portion of his 10-year stint as a pro and spent five years as director of player personnel in San Antonio.

Williams played for the Spurs for three seasons and before his time as an assistant with the Portland Trail Blazers (2005-10) was on the staff of the Spurs when the team won the NBA title in 2004-05.

So Demps and Williams know what it takes to win with a small market team.

Locking up a couple of superstars (like Tim Duncan and Tony Parker or the Spurs and Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook of the Thunder) is a good start.

I feel like the Hornets have one potential star in place in guard Eric Gordon, who only played in a handful of

  • 05/21/12 NBA Rumors: Indiana Pacers Would Be Wise to Pursue... Source: Bleacher Report The Indiana Pacers have a decent shot at reaching the NBA Finals, but forward thinking tells me that restricted free agent Eric Gordon would be an excellent addition to the team in 2012-2013.
