    LAKELAND | In a game with plenty of local flavor, hometown boy Alec Asher pitched No. 1 Polk State College to a nail-biting 4-3 opening-round victory Friday over No. 7 Northwest Florida State (27-18) in the FCSAA state baseball tournament at Joker Marchant Stadium.

    Asher, a flame-throwing sophomore from Lakeland High School, held the Raiders scoreless on two hits until the ninth inning, when he faltered and gave up three runs on two hits and two walks.

    After Polk State reliever Chris Waltermire gave up a two-run single, closing Polk'slead to 4-3, Steve Burnham entered the game and picked up the save by forcing a fly ball.

    "That's the way this tournament is," Polk State coach Al Corbeil said.

    The No. 1-ranked Polk State College baseball team cleaned up the Suncoast Conference post season awards with three Players of the Year.

    Eagle Alec Asher (Lakeland) was named Pitcher of the Year. Sophomore second baseman Conor Szczerba was named Player of the Year and freshman catcher Erik Hindmon was named Defensive Player of the Year.

    Joining the three on the first team are left fielder Mike Danner and pitchers Brian Johnson and Chase Sparkman.

    Earning second team honors are outfielder Kyle Chastain (Auburndale), outfielder Brett Jones, third baseman Matt Singletary, short stop Colt Hankamer and pitchers Steve Burnham and Alex Norris.

    Asher is 10-1 with a 1.33 ERA.

    Szczerba hit .352 with 64 RBI in the leadoff spot.
