Forget the Eulogies, What Now for Yankees?

By Andrew JohnsonSep 24th 2008 – 5:40AM

The final week of the 2008 season has been one long requiem for all things Yankee. On Sunday, Yankee Stadium closed it doors after 85 years. Two days later, the second longest string of postseason appearances was officially snapped. The eulogies have been written, but the game presses on.Five days from now, the Yankees...

The Mets Need a Hero, and That Hero is a 'Little Grouch' Named Trot Nixon

By MulletJun 14th 2008 – 6:00AM

All right, so maybe the Mets aren't expecting Trot Nixon to be a hero and save Willie Randolph's job along with the Mets playoff chances. Rather, simply a guy who will prevent the Mets from bringing up a catcher whenever Moises Alou goes on the disabled list ... as they've traded for Nixon to fill holes in the outfield...

ALCS Game 6: The Liveblog!

By Pat LackeyOct 20th 2007 – 8:00PM

After the first five completed series in this post-season saw the losing team in the series win exactly one game, we've finally got a match-up that's living up to the hype. The Indians and Red Sox both won 96 games in the regular season and now they're playing toe-to-toe in the ALCS. Tonight's Game 6 features a guy who...

Red Sox Bullpen Blows Game 2, Indians Win

By Larry BrownOct 14th 2007 – 8:30AM

Boston made its way into the record books late Saturday night, though it was for an incident for which they're certainly not proud. The Red Sox bullpen gave up seven runs in the top of the 11th, allowing the Indians to take a 13-6 lead. The seven runs were the most ever in LCS history for an extra-inning, no surprise. Eric...

Dirty! Scrappy! Hustle! Grit! Your Guide to ALCS Hyperbole

By Pat LackeyOct 12th 2007 – 11:35AM

A good point was made in the comments of my post about NLCS hyperbole; despite the fact that the Rockies and the D'Backs are probably the two best teams in the NL this year, most so-called experts didn't expect them to be good this year and so rather than actually trying to understand why they're good, they just spew...

Monday must have been a mesmerizing afternoon of baseball in the Wilmington area.

It was the eve of the Wilmington Sharks season opener, and the team gathered to commemorate a new season with a meal.

Earlier in the day, UNCW learned its fate in the NCAA Field of 64.

And as the Seahawks discovered they were bound for the Raleigh Regional, Trot Nixon was about to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Fenway Park in Boston.

The Red Sox invited him as part of their season-long celebration of 100 years of Fenway Park.

"I was feeling a lot of emotions and there were a lot of great things that I was able to be a part of here," Nixon said, in a story published in the Boston Herald.

"Each time that I come back up here it seems I get spoiled more by them," he continued.

Sometimes greatness goes beyond mere talent and chance.

On Sunday, Trot Nixon will be inducted into the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame.

Known as a blue-collar Major League Baseball player during his 12-year career, he transitioned into retirement with little fanfare in the Port City.

"I get treated perfectly fine, just like anybody else here," Nixon said.

In his hometown, Nixon is still revered, yet folks seldom make a big deal that he played right field for the Boston Red Sox. Or that he helped the franchise end an 86-year World Series drought.

"I probably get stopped in more places where I don't live than here in Wilmington," he said.

But last weekend, during his sons' baseball games in Brunswick County, Nixon signed autographs for youth who remember him.

"I try not to come across as someone who is not approachable," he said.
