Hey ET, Are You Out There? Kepler Helps SETI Tune In
The needle-in-a-haystack search for extraterrestrial signals has narrowed a bit, thanks to NASA's Kepler spacecraft. Scientists announced that, of the 1,235 candidate planets discovered by Kepler, 54 of them were in what's known as the Goldilocks zone, a region close enough to its home sun where a planet may harbor...
Can Sun's Gravity Help Us Call ET?
(Dec. 20) -- It might be possible to use the sun as a long-distance telephone to reach out and talk to aliens, some scientists believe. By utilizing the massive gravity of our nearest solar neighbor, a huge telescope could be built, allowing earthlings to send and receive amplified signals to and from extraterrestrial...
Astronomers Worldwide Forge New Rules for ET Engagement
(Oct. 8) -- Is alien disclosure just around the corner? I can't say for sure, but lately there's been a lot of news that, if looked at collectively, could be interpreted as pointing in that direction. It seems as if everyone from the Vatican to the military to scientists conducting the Search for Extraterrestrial...
ET Debate: To Speak or Not to Speak?
(April 26) -- It's generally good advice not to talk to strangers. So when world-famous astrophysicist Stephen Hawking warns us of the danger of speaking to space aliens, he's only talking common sense. Hawking, arguably the most famous living scientist, speculates that trying to interact directly with an ET might pose a...

- 06/02/12 No Intelligent Aliens Detected In Gliese 581 Source: Slashdot astroengine writes "Using an Australian very long baseline array (VLBA) of three radio antennae, the first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) campaign has been carried out on a SETI target star: the famous Gliese 581 red dwarf. However, after 8 hours of observing the star â thought to play host to six exoplanets, two of which are in the star's 'habitable zone' â no alien signals were detected. This result isn't surprising, as the likelihood of us stumbling across intelligent aliens living in the Gliese 581 system transmitting radio is extremely slim, but it does validate VLBI as a very exciting means of using the vast amount of exoplanetary data (coming from missions such as the Kepler space telescope) for 'directed SETI' projects."
- 06/02/12 New targeted ET hunt fails to find alien signals Source: New Kerala Dot Com The hunt for other intelligent civilisations has a new technique in its arsenal, but its first use has turned up no signs of alien broadcasts, it has been revealed.
- 06/01/12 Planet-Hunting with Laser Rulers Source: Photonics Spectra GARCHING, Germany, June 1, 2012 â Astronomers searching for extrasolar planets may be a step closer to finding other Earthlike places in the universe around sunlike stars, thanks to a new tool that promises to increase the accuracy of planet-hunting devices by tenfold.
